Miracles: What The Bible Has To Say About Them

It was a miracle! How many times have you heard someone say that? Probably hundreds of times. But they don’t really mean that it was a miracle - what they really mean is that the event they witnessed was amazing, improbable, or inexplicable.

But are there real miracles? Have there been times that the natural laws of the universe, such as gravity, or even death, have been stopped, changed, or reversed? To find the answer to this question, we must turn to the Bible.

Fact #1: Jesus performed many miracles

In the four gospels, we find many instances were Jesus performed miracles, such as “Then they brought him a demon-possessed man who was blind and mute, and Jesus healed him, so that he could both talk and see.” (Matthew 12:22) Perhaps one of the most famous of Jesus’ miracles was the raising of Lazarus from the dead, which we read about in John 11: “Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days…Jesus called in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” 44The dead man came out.”

Fact #2: Jesus performed these miracles to prove that he was God

In the book of Acts, Peter says that “Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know.”

Fact #3: Jesus gave authority to his disciples to perform miracles

In Matthew 10:1, we’re told that Jesus “called his twelve disciples to him and gave them authority to drive out evil[a] spirits and to heal every disease and sickness.”

Fact #4: God has given authority to his servants at various times to perform miracles

The Bible has many stories of miracles performed by God’s servants - Moses, Elijah, Elisha, and others. The question is - does God still empower his followers to work miracles in his name? That is a tough question. The answer is beyond the scope of this article, but I hope that you will think and study the Bible to find the answer!

First you have to believe in the bible/ god. Which I for one do not, but do not get me wrong, I fully support your beliefs, as long as you have well thought out ideas. Now coming from my standpoint where I have pondered these miracles and acts over and over, I have come to the conclusion that there were no miracles. It is said that the Jews who wrote the bible were all mostly intelligent men, and it has also been said that these miracles/ teachings may not have occured but rather they are just metaphors for greater lessons. Jesus may not have made the blind man see, instead he made an ignorant man aware of his wrongdoings. It goes on and on like that, you can interpret the bible as you would like. I am not discrediting the Bible, just questioning its meaning and purpose. I believe that there was a Jesus, I do not believe he was the son of god. He taught a lot of good lessons but no where can you prove that he did what he did. The Bible for all we know could be pure hyperbole. Who knows? Who knows the Bible’s purpose even, when they say afterlife, do they mean a heaven, a true second life. Or do they mean that we live on in the things we leave behind. Or do they simply mean that our bodies decay and feed the plants regenerating a whole new cycle of life? Is it a metaphor, or is it for real? I think you should decide that. Do not blow this comment off, I am not here to spread atheist beliefs, just trying to spread a way of thinking, and a way of living. “The unexamined life is not worth living for man” -Socrates-. Become enlightened, never be satisfied with your beliefs, and never have a stable opinion on such an unstable topic. Finally, you should believe in the idea that nothing is a 100% guarantee, as you stated with your miracles, laws can be defied and things can be left unexplainable. But the fact is, I am not right about any of this, and you may not be either. It is all a 50-50 chance, and we will have to wait to find out, Remain open minded, that is all I can ask. Whenever faced with a difficult situation I ask you remember a latin word, that means open. Remain open in everything you do. Archo.

Feel free to email me at any time if you have questions or ideas you want to share, we all have something to say, sometimes we just don’t have someone to listen.
Sincerely,
Phillip Shrider

I’ve experienced miracles in my life, like being healed from a kidney infection, and walking away from car accidents where the car was completely totaled without a scratch or so much as a piece of broken glass on my person. Or when money has been desparate and in answer to my prayers a check shows up out of the blue for the exact amount we needed to pay a bill……..
I have oftened wondered what it would be like to be the woman who touched the Savior’s robe and was healed and he said, “Who touched me?”
What an amazing experience!
